Mirth Connect is een integratie-engine voor de zorg: net als een tolk vertaalt het berichtstandaarden naar de standaard die het ontvangende systeem begrijpt.[5] Het zet een inkomend formaat om naar een ander (bv. HL7 naar XML), kan gegevens uit databases lezen en erin wegschrijven, en routeert berichten naar hun bestemmingen.[5] Het is daarmee meer dan een algemene message broker, die enkel berichten transporteert; het verschil met brokers en met bibliotheken staat op Integratie-engine (interface engine).[19] NextGen verkoopt het als gelicentieerde engine die de organisatie zelf onderhoudt en uitbaat.[20]

Mirth Connect is één product binnen het bredere patroon Integratie-engine (interface engine), waar een neutrale vergelijkingstabel staat.[16] Andere integratie-engines zijn onder meer de Mirth-forks Open Integration Engine en BridgeLink, InterSystems Health Connect, Rhapsody en Infor Cloverleaf.[12][14][24][25][26] Wie integraties liever als code bouwt, kan een framework als Apache Camel gebruiken: een bibliotheek die in een Java-toepassing wordt ingebouwd, met routes in Java, XML of YAML in plaats van kanalen in een grafische beheerinterface.[27] Ook Camels HL7-component gebruikt HAPI.[28] De Atlas beveelt geen van deze producten aan.
